How Does Ion Exchange Hard Water Conditioning Work?
Ion exchange is a process that is very effective in hard water treatment. It not only balances the mineral content of water but also helps to regulate alkalinity, remove harmful ions and disinfect water. Essentially, ion exchange is a process that sees undesired ions such as nitrate, sulphate and arsenic, exchanged with other ions with a similar charge.
Calcium and Magnesium Ions
Cation (positively charged ion) exchange water softeners serve to remove magnesium and calcium ions found in hard water by exchanging them with sodium. These are considered soft and they do not produce the problems associated with hard scaling.
Once the process is complete and all ions have been exchanged, the system is flushed of excess ions. During the process, the sodium charge will deplete. When the charge is near depletion the system will regenerate to recover exchange capacity. A high concentration of sodium solution is drawn through the resin bed to remove calcium and magnesium, which are then disposed of.
Our ion exchange systems are guaranteed to produce significantly faster results. They are considered ideal for large-scale water treatment and long-term needs. For many, the major selling point of our ion exchange systems is the fact that there is absolutely no requirement for chemicals and disinfectants. Installation and maintenance are also extremely simple.
