1Case Study: Water Conditioning for a Sustainable Future
Here we look at a case study on how Hydrosmart can provide hard water treatment solutions on the way to achieving a more sustainable future. Barry and Leanne O’Sullivan are an award-winning couple who have long been concerned with sustainability on their Burdekin, Queensland property, Glenalpine. We’re proud to say we were able to help them continue to achieve their sustainability goals.
Sustainable Agricultural Business
Barry and Leanne won the 2014 Premier’s Sustainability Award for improving agricultural performance on their cattle farm, Glenalpine. This came on the back of developing a sustainable agricultural business while demonstrating both an improved environment and on-farm performance.
This interest led them to take a closer look at the water they used on their property. While researching with a view to further sustainability, they found Hydrosmart. Eventually, the O’Sullivans decided to install six Hydrosmart units on Glenalpine’s 23,385 hectares.
Multiple Benefits of a Hard Water Conditioner
The couple has since reported multiple benefits of installing an electronic hard water conditioner. Scale removal from hundreds of kilometres of distribution pipes has stopped the constant and costly problems of blockages and leaks, preventing loss of water supply.
Their stock has clearly seen the benefits of a treated system. Leanne reported that they enjoyed their heaviest year, possibly assisted by earlier rains and the installation of Hydrosmart. Treated water provides an easier metabolic breakdown of nutrients in foods by assisting the microbiome in the animal’s stomach for easier weight gain.
Better for Glenalpine and the Environment
The couple also reported improved water usage in the home with mineral residue no longer forming crusts on fittings and surfaces. Outside, lawns that were struggling were now growing using treated bore water.
While clearly improving many aspects of life on Glenalpine, Hydrosmart’s hard water systems have also allowed cost savings and a sustainable approach to farm water management. Hydrosmart technology requires no chemicals, filters or maintenance and once installed, there are no running costs. All that is needed is solar power or a power point to “plug and play”, allowing those with sustainable goals like Leanne and Barry at Glenalpine, to make the best use of the water on their property.
