With access to clean drinking water a humanitarian issue worldwide, desalination is becoming a popular way to consistently and safely produce clean water. With this increase, a number of different companies have started to design and manufacture effective saltwater treatment systems. This, in turn, has started to make these systems cheaper and more accessible to all. In this article, Hydrosmart discusses the science of saltwater treatment systems, exploring their applications and how they can have a positive impact on society as a whole in the future. We also briefly touch on our ion-exchange hard water system.
Applications of Desalination
Desalination is extremely useful when you do not have direct access to groundwater. Groundwater is a lot cleaner than salt water and can be used for several applications without having to clean or filter it at all. On the other hand, saltwater must be passed through a water desalination system before it can be used at all.
How Water Desalination Works
With Hydrosmart technology, desalination is achieved by increasing the dissolution of charged compounds in the water, or more technically, the hydration state of solutes. Other forms of desalination work by using reverse osmosis technology, which separates the water molecules from seawater. This is achieved by passing the water through semipermeable membranes at extremely high pressure. These membranes allow the small water molecules to pass through, while the larger salt and other impure elements are left behind.
The Hydrosmart Salt Water System
Hydrosmart has developed a saltwater treatment system that has several different applications. Hydrosmart’s system treats brackish bore water, scale and mineral build-up, iron-rich water, poor soil and poor plant growth as well as assisting with struggling livestock. The system is not effective in desalination and treating water, it is also extremely affordable, costing only $20.00 per year to run and operate.
In residential settings, ion exchange hard water systems replace unwanted ions such as calcium and magnesium and replace them with non-hard ions.
